**Overview:**
The Gibson SG-100, introduced in 1971, represents a unique chapter in Gibson’s history. As part of Gibson’s brief foray into budget-friendly SG models, the SG-100 is a distinctive hybrid of classic SG aesthetics and innovative design choices.
**Key Features:**
– **Body and Finish:** The SG-100 features a solid maple body, deviating from the typical mahogany used in most SGs. It’s available in classic Cherry and Walnut finishes, offering a robust and chunky feel compared to its more slender SG counterparts.
– **Pickups and Electronics:** Unlike the standard SG models that typically come with P90 or Humbucker pickups, the SG-100 is equipped with single-coil pickups. This choice, combined with slider-knob control switches, imparts a sound more akin to a Telecaster than a traditional SG.
– **Neck and Headstock:** The guitar boasts a thin neck profile and a non-angled headstock, contributing to its unique feel and playability.
– **Design and Build:** With its heavier build and distinctive controls, the SG-100 stands out as a notable departure from Gibson’s usual SG offerings. It features a single pickup in the neck position, making it a bit of a rare bird among SG models.
**Historical Context:**
The SG-100 was part of a trio of budget SG models (including the SG-200 and SG-250) that aimed to replace the Melody Maker as Gibson’s entry-level offering. However, its heavy build and single-coil pickups led to lukewarm reception and a short production run, with Gibson phasing out the SG-100 by 1972.
**Why Consider the SG-100?**
The Gibson SG-100 is a rare find and a fascinating piece of guitar history. Its hybrid design offers a distinctive twist on the classic SG formula, making it an intriguing option for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate its unique blend of features and its place in Gibson’s experimental phase of the early 1970s.
Don’t miss your chance to own this piece of Gibson’s lesser-known legacy.
