F-style Mandolin with Spruce Top, Maple Back and Sides, Maple Neck, and Ebony Fingerboard – Cremona Sunburst

A Merger of Historic Design and Bluegrass Roots

A throwback that harkens back to the days when mandolin orchestras were at the height of popularity, the Epiphone F-5G is a faithful re-creation of a historic design created by Lloyd Loar — a design cemented in history by the legendary Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe! Epiphone’s take on this stunning mandolin starts with a Sitka spruce top, figured maple back, sides, and neck, and a luscious ebony fingerboard. The F-style body, complete with its F-holes, cuts a musically inspiring scene both visually and sonically. The F-5G sports a bright, musical choice of woods that are able to shine through with all the depth of their character thanks to their solid construction — no laminates here! Trust the mandolinists when we say modern players looking for a definitive bluegrass instrument will find it right here in the Epiphone F-5G.

A bluegrass player’s first choice

The Epiphone F-5G starts strong with an all-solid wood construction that’s reflected in the high quality of its voice. This mandolin touts an Sitka spruce top and figured maple back and sides that combine for a balanced, clear, and articulate acoustic signature. The figured maple of the back and sides shines through the stain, while the absence of a pickguard puts all the focus on the spruce top. Meanwhile, a figured maple neck and ebony fingerboard set your hand up for comfortable fretwork. A dovetail neck joint sets the F-5G up for excellent resonance, while a bone nut and vintage F-style in-line tuners contribute to rock-solid intonation.

An icon rebirthed

It’s hard to improve on such an iconic piece of history, and Epiphone knew the instrument would be best served by sticking closely to the original design. This new iteration stays true to Lloyd Loar’s visionary design, bringing one of history’s most iconic instruments to the hands of modern players! The Epiphone F-5G mandolin sports an F-style body that makes it visually ornate while contributing to enhanced sound projection courtesy of its dual F-holes. These holes lend the mandolin its famous “chop” that’s almost percussive in nature. Some even say the ornate scroll on the body contributes to a thicker tone overall. What’s for sure is that the Epiphone F-5G, based on designs that defined the genre, makes a phenomenal bluegrass mandolin and has the grit to cut through a mix.
