Paying Homage to John D’Angelico’s Original Design

Say hello to authentic jazzbox tone. The D’Angelico Excel EXL-1 is a full-sized hollowbody electric guitar that pays tribute to the original designs built by John D’Angelico in the early 1900s. Its laminated maple body pairs with a laminate spruce top for articulate attack and smooth resonance. The guitar features a set 3-piece neck constructed from maple and walnut, supplying easy playability and excellent sustain. Plug into your favorite amp, and the floating Seymour Duncan Johnny Smith mini humbucker delivers warm, smooth, and crystal-clear tones fit for rich chord voicings and soaring arpeggio-based lines. Players particularly appreciate the pickguard-mounted controls, which make a minimal sonic impact on the acoustic tone. Classic tonewoods and quality craftsmanship

D’Angelico crafts each Excel EXL-1 hollowbody from maple and spruce, just like John D’Angelico did in the early 20th century. This guitar’s laminate spruce top and laminate maple back and sides team up to deliver excellent response and old-school jazzbox tone. In addition, the EXL-1 comes with a floating ebony bridge and classic stairstep tailpiece.

Floating mini-humbucker pickup

When plugged in, the Excel EXL-1’s voice is supplied by a Seymour Duncan Johnny Smith floating mini humbucker. It pays homage to the original mini humbucker played by Johnny Smith, a jazz guitarist heralded for his smooth sound and sophisticated style. As you’d expect, this mini humbucker produces a palette of warm sounds that is perfect for everything from jazz chording and melody lines to octaves a la Wes Montgomery. Plus, the volume and tone controls are mounted to the pickguard for no noticeable impact on the axe’s acoustic tone.

Super-playable neck

Your fingers will fall in love with the Excel EXL-1 as soon as you start fretting notes. The 3-piece neck is made from two pieces of maple sandwiching a single walnut ply. And it plays like a dream. D’Angelico carves the neck into a comfortable “C”-shaped profile, which offers a stable, hand-filling feel. Plus, the neck is topped by a 12-inch radius ebony fingerboard studded with 22 easy-playing frets.
