A USA-made Tribute to Epiphone’s Classic Coronet

Inspired by Epiphone’s first solidbody guitar, the Epiphone Coronet marks the model’s grand return to its USA-made roots. This world-class reimagining of the Coronet’s slab-bodied predecessors starts with a mahogany body that’s just slightly slimmer and lighter compared to a vintage example. Next, the body’s signature dual cutaways give you unimpeded access to the breadth of the Slim Taper mahogany neck’s rosewood fingerboard. Players who favor simplicity will be sure to love this guitar’s no-nonsense configuration of a single P-90, Volume/Tone knobs, and a 1-piece wraparound tailpiece. This simple but potent setup excels at everything from ripping garage rock riffs to warm, full-range cleans. Lastly, the charmingly old-school “Bikini” badge headstock, single-ply white pickguard, and period-inspired octagonal knobs capture the high-class elegance of Epiphone’s transitional years. Loaded with a single soapbar pickup, the Epiphone Coronet is a no-nonsense vintage-style rock machine in the same vein as the legendary Gibson Les Paul Jr. This guitar’s bridge-position single-coil P-90 pickup delivers a clear and midrange-heavy bark that sings when pushing through the front end of a hot tube amp or overdrive pedal. What’s more, our P-90 fanatics praise the pickup’s ability to roll back into rich, full-bodied clean sounds with a quick swipe of the Volume knob. From ragged garage rock riffs to crisp cleans, the Epiphone Coronet’s single-P-90 supplies an impressive degree of sonic versatility.

A Coronet chronicle

Before being purchased by Gibson in 1957, Epiphone was revered as one of the finest guitar manufacturers in America, crafting premier-grade archtops and acoustic instruments. However, the one thing that Epiphone didn’t have was a model to fill the ever-growing market for solidbody guitars — an issue that Gibson quickly rectified in 1959 when they added Coronet to the Epiphone lineup. This double-cut, slab-bodied 6-string marks Epiphone’s very first foray into the world of the solidbody guitar, taking more than a bit of inspiration from Gibson’s contemporary double-cut Les Paul Jr. model. And just like the original Coronet, this USA-made modern iteration of the Epiphone Coronet is crafted in the very same facility as Gibson’s other electric instruments.

While the original Coronet was produced in the very same factory as the rest of Gibson’s 6-string offerings, Epiphone’s USA-made instruments have always sported a unique style that stands apart from their Kalamazoo counterparts.
