Inspired by Mary Ford’s One-of-a-kind Custom 1958 Les Paul

Way back in 1958, six years after Mary Ford and her then-husband/musical partner Les Paul helped Gibson design their first solidbody guitar, it’s believed that Gibson created a one-off custom Les Paul just for Mary. The Gibson Mary Ford Les Paul Standard pays tribute to that nearly mythical instrument, modifying the traditional 1950s Les Paul formula with a set of fine floral aesthetics. From the mahogany body to the maple top to the Tune-o-matic bridge, this guitar’s foundation is familiar to any guitarist who’s ever slung on a late-1950s-style gold top. Two Burstbucker pickups unlock all the warmth, depth, and dynamics of a true PAF pickup; these ever-versatile pickups effortlessly accommodate everything from the rapid-fire lead lines so favored by Les and Mary to all-out rock ’n’ roll firepower. You also get a fast-playing SlimTaper mahogany neck and elegant rosewood fingerboard. Finished off with a floral-themed pickguard and armrest, as per Mary’s 6-string, the Gibson Les Paul Mary Ford Les Paul Standard is a loving tribute to one of the most foundational artists of Gibson’s golden age.

One-half Les Paul, one-half ES-295

The Les Paul first launched in 1952, but it wasn’t the only instrument that Les and his partner Mary Ford helped design for Gibson. Right around the same time, Les and Mary gave Gibson the idea to deck out their ES-175 model with a golden coat and fine floral patterns, resulting in the iconic ES-295 model that utterly revolutionized music forever in the hands of Elvis Presley’s guitarist, Scotty Moore.

Later down the line in 1958, it’s believed that Gibson treated Mary Ford to her first signature guitar — a gleaming Les Paul gold top, complete with those same floral patterns she helped inspire from the ES-295 on both the pickguard and the thoroughly non-standard armrest. In addition, the guitar featured cherry-colored back and sides rather than the all-gold appearance of a standard Les Paul. Gibson’s modern Mary Ford Les Paul Standard is their tribute to that very instrument, celebrating what’s arguably the second signature Les Paul in the brand’s history.

Burstbucker pickups offer vintage clarity and modern power

This Mary Ford Les Paul Standard is loaded with dual Burstbucker humbuckers that capture the warmth, depth, and sheer clarity of Gibson’s most iconic pickup: the PAF humbucker. From the mismatched wiring to the Alnico II pickups to the non-wax potted design, the Burstbucker is a stunningly accurate re-creation of late-’50s Gibson humbucker tone, with just a touch more power to better drive your favorite tube amp into sweet saturation. What’s more, unlike the pickups used in the original Les Pauls, this guitar utilizes a lower output pickup in the neck (Burstbucker 2) and a hotter output pickup in the bridge (Burstbucker 3) to better balance between positions.
